Alton Garden Centre began in 1971 when Derek Bunker borrowed £1,000 and opened a small greenhouse on a plot of land near the Arterial road. It was just big enough for ten cars.
Now, fifty years later, it's still a family business. Derek, along with his wife, three sons and a daughter all work there. They're joined by six other family members. The team has grown to over 90 full-time staff some of whom have been there for over 30 years.
Over these fifty years, the garden centre has evolved along with the industry. It's not just about plants anymore – they offer a wide range of products. When Allett decided to have fewer but more specialised dealers I saw an opportunity to exclusively maximise sales and service of a premium product in our area.

What can a customer expect in terms of a customer experience from Alton’s?
When you buy a machine from Altons, you get the best possible advice available on your purchase. We will always ask questions on the size and type of garden our customers have and assess which size and type of machine is best suited to our customers needs. Once the purchase is made, we then build, fuel and oil the machine, make sure the blades are set up correctly and ensure everything is working perfectly. Only then will we either release or deliver the machine to the customer.
What After-Sales support do you offer?
When the machine is due for service, we send out a reminder to the customer. We offer a collection and delivery service or the customer can drop the machine off to us. We have a fully equipped workshop with trained technicians who have over 35 years experience between them. Our comprehensive services include a full engine service, blade sharpening and inspection of drive components as well as general repairs to a large range of machines.
