From Hospital Halls to Lovely Lawns: Stuart's Journey of Passion and Dedication

Hi my name is Stuart Main I am an Orthopaedic Practioner in NHS Fife Based in fife Scotland. I have currently been in my role for 18 years. 

My passion for lawn care started when I bought my own house which had a big garden .A fly-Mo was my first lawnmower as I was wanting those deep green lines. Also I have a passion for Golf and this is where I picked up hints and tips from my head Greenkeeper at Lundin Golf Club. I basically followed what they did at certain times of year for example coring ,sanding feeding etc. Moving into my house I had to do a lot of drainage work to achieve a beautiful lawn but it took a lot of sleepless nights and worrying and planning.

I started to get into cylinder mowers and after getting one for my Christmas one year it sparked off a grass love affair. 💚

The NTC hospital garden came about as were moving into a brand-new facility (National Treatment Centre Fife Orthopaedics) - A 33 Million pound build. Jokingly members of staff/ consultants made the comments and jokes about myself looking after the courtyard garden and they were right. After looking out into the garden every day I started to get frustrated about the weeds and the grass looking poor and wasn't getting maintained on a regular basis , I couldn't let it go downhill so I started to look after it myself and volunteer my spare time. 

In 2023 I began the master plan getting funding together from an NHS charity and I went to a social media page from my local community and was overwhelmed with their generosity....from pots , flowers, plants, fertiliser, garden furniture and some money donations.

I currently cut the Lawn three to four times a week at the weekend and after my shift at the hospital.

Staff have noticed that to maintain a quality lawn takes dedication to achieve this.

Also seeing the staff and patients enjoy it makes me feel fantastic and makes me want to achieve more in 2025 and in the years to come. I am looking forward to next year and I am currently saving up my pennies for my first ever brand new Allett electric cylinder mower ! 🌼🌼🌼
