Lawn Enthusiasts Unite at Buckden Towers – A Glorious Day at the Allett Lawn Academy

The Allett Lawn Academy event at Buckden Towers on April 29, 2025 was an overwhelming success. With stunning weather and a perfect blend of hands-on learning and insightful theory sessions, attendees had the opportunity to immerse themselves in both practical skills and expert-led presentations. It was also a fantastic opportunity to network with fellow lawn care enthusiasts and professionals all sharing a common passion for perfecting their lawns. We had our youngest attendees ever join us on the course- what a great day of learning they had!

The Level 1 course, led by Richard Salmon and assisted by Andy Trainell, brought together a diverse group of lawn care enthusiasts, from seasoned professionals to enthusiastic amateurs. The event covered everything from lawn maintenance to the science behind soil and grass care, ensuring participants walked away with new knowledge and practical skills.

Participants were introduced to various topics such as:

  • Grass varieties and their lifecycle

  • Soil types and test analysis

  • Lawn renovation techniques and equipment usage

  • Fertilising, overseeding and irrigation

  • Backlapping a cylinder mower

  • And more!

What made the day special were the practical workshops, where attendees got to try out Allett mowers with the various cartridges. The chance to test the electric mowers in real-world conditions was a favourite experience for many, as James Tamburrini from Oasis Garden Services shared:

"My favourite part of the day is getting hands-on, having a look at the new models of mowers that Allett’s got—testing out a lot of their new electric or battery version mowers with the different cartridges. That was really, really good."

Testimonials: A Day to Remember

Here are a few highlights from some of the attendees, reflecting on what they gained from the experience:

  • Greg Blythe, who attended the Level 1 course, described the day as "thoroughly enjoyable" and "very well planned and managed," adding, "Thank you again" for such an enriching experience.

  • James Tamburrini shared how the Academy helped him refine his skills, saying, "I just wanted to fill in some gaps in my knowledge," and he especially appreciated the hands-on opportunities to explore new lawn care tools.

  • John Elcock from Lawn Perfect had a strong appreciation for the quality of Allett products, stating, "It’s not cheap and cheerful, it’s just quality." He was impressed with the 43-inch lawn mower and the lawn lute adding that the course was absolutely worth attending for anyone serious about lawn care, whether as a hobby or business.

  • Richard Burge, who started renovating his lawn during the COVID lockdown, emphasised how the day was a perfect blend of theory and practical application. He learned valuable tips on fertilisation, overseeding and understanding grass varieties, particularly noting how to avoid over fertilising and when to apply specific treatments. His advice for anyone thinking of attending? "You will learn absolutely loads. I thought I knew a bit about grass but learned so much." He highly recommended the course to both amateur enthusiasts and professionals alike, calling it "highly informative."

  • Darren Higham of DH Maintenance, who runs his own garden care business, was also full of praise for the day, stating that while he has years of experience, he still found new techniques and tips to enhance his work. "You can never stop learning," Darren emphasised, explaining how the course reassured him that he's on the right track while also helping him identify areas for improvement. "You can never stop learning, and there’s always something you can pick up." – Darren Higham
