International Women's Day | Linda Lang - Plymouth Croquet Club

For International Women's Day we asked questions to a lot of women who work in the groundskeeping or gardening industry about their work. This time it's Linda Lang from Plymouth Croquet Club. I am Secretary of a Croquet Club and also look after our lawns. Our Lawns are on top of a reservoir and as such I am unable to use a petrol mower or any chemicals. It is impossible to employ a green keeper under those conditions and I have been looking after our lawns for the last four years learning as I go. I am self taught in using our battery powered Elmow24 which is the battery powered version of Allett's current Tournament. They no longer produce this machine but have started to introduce new battery powered products into the range. We feed our grass with homemade Nettle and Comfrey tea. I also scarify and verticut as required. I do this because I love to play Croquet and want our lawns to be as good as they can be as our Club plays competitively in the SW Federation league. A member of our Club was asked “who is the little schoolgirl who cuts the grass.” I am over 70 years old and 5 foot nothing! The club welcomes newcomers of all ages to a fascinating game that is played on equal terms by men and women. Croquet can be a pleasant social activity over a relaxing afternoon, or a very competitive match in which players use their skill and tactical abilities to outwit their opponents.
